Jimmy Buffett Protects his “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere” Slogan

Head Coral-Reefer Jimmy Buffett might be a laid back guy, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t one of the smartest businessmen in music. Buffett spotted an ad by The Walking Company that used his trademarked slogan “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere” and immediately informed the board of his company urging them to take action. Margaritaville Enterprises LLC. owns the rights to the term “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere” which originated in the duet with Alan Jackson of the same name which went on to be the #1 country song of 2003. “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere” has become a wide spread catch phrase in the public and is still one of the most popular cell phone ring tones today. Score one more for the Jimmy Buffett empire!

Jimmy Buffett Puts on Surprise Show for Saints Fans

While down in the New Orleans to cheer on his Saints, Jimmy Buffett performed a few songs on the back of a truck while partying with the Down Undas Tailgating Club before the game. He struck a deal with a fan that he would play a song if they gave them their Saints hat. Parked under a highway, Jimmy jammed with the Creole String Beans playing “Sea Cruise” and “Margaritaville”.

A small crowd sang along before Bubba returned to the party of beer, seafood, and barbecue. That evening an overtime field goal sent the Saints to their first Super Bowl in the team’s 44-year history. I’m sure Jimmy will be on hand when the Saints take on the Indianapolis Colts on February 7th. Everyone in Miami for Super Bowl weekend should be on the lookout for anymore impromptu shows to pop up.

Jimmy Raises Money for Children’s Park in Bora Bora

[ Comments Off ] Posted on 01.22.10 under News

Playing two shows on the island of Bora Bora, Jimmy Buffet and his band of Coral Reefers raised $40,000 to build a park and playground for Tahitian children. The band was joined during the two shows by Bora Bora local musician John Gabilou and a Tahitian girls’ local singing group.

Bora Bora has long been a favorite port of call for Buffet as the troubadour wrote his famous tune “One Particular Harbor” about one his visits to the island and recorded the track while in Tahiti in 1982. Buffet talked his promoter Tom Moffat into a trip to Tahiti where his music wasn’t known. Jimmy recalls opening for hulu dancers and a beauty contest. No wonder he loves Tahiti so much!

But there’s this one particular harbour
So far but yet so near
Where I see the days as they fade away
And finally disappear

Earthquake

With the earthquake in Haiti, we have found that even the singers are getting involved in the relief effort. Remember the various benefits that happened after Hurricane Katrina? It’s turned into a similar kind of thing here after the earthquake. Jimmy Buffett has posted a video to YouTube telling people to text money to the relief effort. It makes sense, because he’s been to the capital of that ravaged country and he likes it a lot. Now much of that city is destroyed and he wants to help the people. It’s not just what you do as an entertainer, it’s what anybody is saying right now. Hopefully many people will follow his advice. Thanks for publicizing this Jimmy.

Land Shark Stadium No More

[ Comments Off ] Posted on 01.11.10 under Uncategorized

The Miami stadium that was known as Land Shark Stadium for the last few months has been changed again into Dolphins Stadium, reverting it back to it’s former name. This year has been huge for them, with the Dolphins contending for the AFC East until very late in the year. There have been lots of different famous performers in the stadium for the last little while and this has brought a lot of new revenue into the area. This is the kind of deal that is made to bring the stadium into a more prominent place. The stadium will now be Dolphin Stadium; there will be no Land Shark Stadium Super Bowl this year. But Jimmy remains a partial owner of the Dolphins, I believe, so hopefully they can keep the team on the mend for the next few years.

Free Show

There is a free Jimmy Buffett show coming up. It’s on Friday, so you’ll have to make your plans right now. And it’s in Waikiki. However, this is a great place for Parrotheads to go. What better place to be in the middle of winter, when so many people are cold and sad. If you get to Waikiki, you’ll be very pleased with the way that you feel about thing and the sun will do you some good. Yes, maybe your friends will be annoyed when you show up in the middle of January with a suntan, but you’ll have seen your favorite musician in action. And you will have kept to one of the main Parrothead tenets: don’t sweat it! It’s one of the best things about being a Buffett fan; you can relax and enjoy life without feeling guilty about it!

The CD

[ Comments Off ] Posted on 01.04.10 under Uncategorized

I just can’t stop reading and thinking about Buffet Hotel CD that was just released earlier in December. There’s just something different about it compared to many of the other Buffett pieces. The CD has been getting good reviews. An Arizona reviewer states that it’s a good soundtrack for anyone who wants to enjoy a warm drink on the porch. Some of us will obviously have to wait a few more months before we can get out on the porch for real, but you’ll get to hear the music already. I think the mastery of this album is the addition of the African folk rhythms and some of the new instrumentation that Jimmy has added for this project. I thought it was just going to be a basic collection of tunes from his tours of the last year or two. But no! It came out as an inventive and new style of music that is interesting but close enough to the normal as to avoid being jarring. This is such fun, so hopefully we’ll be able to hear more of this kind of music in the future projects that he’s planning out!

Politics

[ Comments Off ] Posted on 12.31.09 under Uncategorized

Will Jimmy get behind Kinky Friedman’s bid for Texas agriculture chief? That’s the question on every Parrothead’s lips today as the campaign heats up. While Friedman hopes for political office, it seems as though Buffett is trying to stay out of it, although many people seem to remember how excited he was about the campaign of Obama. Maybe we will get to see one of this year’s hottest musicians finally back a small political movement. It’s going to be an interesting year otherwise for Buffett, as he takes his new tunes out on the road for the first time. His new album has been greeted happily by many long-time fans. Hopefully we’ll get to sing along in the concert halls and stadiums all spring, summer and autumn long!

Happy Birthday!

We almost missed it! Well, I almost missed it! Jimmy had his birthday earlier this week and I didn’t say a single word about it. I know that Jimmy is pretty relaxed about things, so I don’t think he’ll be too angry about me missing it. Besides, I was too excited about his new album. In fact, I think it’s more important that he gave me the best birthday present ever, although my birthday’s only in March. The thing is, he gave me a present for his birthday, it would seem. It’s the new album, which I’m really digging. Whether you enjoy the great beachy music that he writes or the great new kinds of African rhythms, it’s a great album. So this is why I think Jimmy will forgive me: I’m sitting here enjoying the newest CD and having a great time. That’s my excuse and I’m sticking with it!

Trip to Africa

[ Comments Off ] Posted on 12.21.09 under Uncategorized

The various interviews conducted after the release of the new album have brought out an interesting storyline. One of his biggest inspirations for this album was a trip to Africa sometime ago. He says that he was in Africa and just heard these amazing sounds and decided to put it into his repertoire. He even put in some traditional instruments for the album, though it’s not overpowering. Maybe he’ll add some more of those in next time around. For now, though, we can definitely enjoy this great fusion of music, which combines the great Buffett rock with some great African beats and just a dash of something extra. A lot of people have told me that this aspect of the album is one of their favorite parts, though some of those people would even like more of it!
