A Jimmy Buffett Fan

Mohegan Sun

In November, we will be seeing Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band playing some music at the Mohegan Sun. It seems a little weird to think of sun in November but he always brings some sun to the world. Ok, maybe that’s a bit corny, but I’m sure it is going to be a fun show to see during the cooler months. When it gets cold, there’s nothing better than to see a show like that which gives you the feeling of summer, even if the season isn’t quite right. The music will just make you happy, even if you’re one of those people who gets a little bit down during the colder months. What better way to spend an evening around Thanksgiving than hearing this great music performed by the best in the world.

Jimmy Buffett performed at a tailgate party during last week’s football game against the Indianapolis Colts. It turns out Bill Parcells, Dolphins coach, doesn’t mind having a bit of glamour and music with his football every week. It’ll put people in the seats and get some more home fans certainly wont hurt the team. I know that this particular news isn’t about the music as such. But without the music, there would be no Parrotheads and he’s hoping that his work helps to bring the team back this year. They had a good year last year, but now they will be hoping to get back to the playoffs this season.

Football

The football season is beginning and Jimmy Buffett will be heading to some of the first games. The year is bigger for the Dolphins because of all the owners seem to be big celebrities, trying to bring people into the stadium and hopefully giving the team some real success. There will be some impressive halftime shows this year, with thousands of parrotheads dancing, singing and all that kind of thing. It’s a little bit strange to see such big halftime shows during the regular season, especially when neither of the teams is particularly impressive. Football seems like it’s pretty far afield for the world of Jimmy, but it’s going to be cool to see what he does to this team.

End of an Era

Mary Travers has passed away. She was the Mary in Peter, Paul and Mary. She was sick for awhile and passed away this week at the age of 72. She will be missed. While it’s not clear if the group’s music directly influenced Jimmy, it does seem clear that they laid much of the groundwork for the future audience of musicians like Jimmy. His music, with it’s similarities to folk-rock, would have never had the kind of audience that it has without groups like Peter, Paul, and Mary to give people the feel for that kind of music. This weekend, give yourself a little while to hear a little bit of their music and remember the people who made it all possible.

Benefits

The 2009 Bridge School Benefit concert will include our friend Jimmy, as well as Chris Martin and No Doubt. These are some fun performers, although they are all very different from one another. It’s going to be one of those concerts that people will remember for the odd mix and some of the cool collaboration that it will inspire. Have you thought about this yet? I’m going to have a great time at the benefit. Plus, the proceeds go to a school that helps students with severe disabilities. Very nice. It’s always good when performers lend their talents to this kind of event, because not only does it raise money for the organization, but it also serves to raise people’s consciousness about it.

Panhandle PhunFest

This week there will be the Panhandle PhunFest once again. It’s going to be a lot of fun to see, because it’s a nice afternoon for the whole family. What is it? It is a virtual beach party, with lots of games and activities for everyone, and much entertainment too. The Parrot Head clubs of the area are also joining together for this and all the proceeds go to the Fisher House, a group that helps military families, especially those who are currently overseas. The fest is going to be very exciting for everyone and you don’t want to miss it! Jimmy himself wont be there, as far as we know, but there will be a lot of music in his style and you’ll get to do the “hanging-out” thing that people are always talking about.

Jimmy Meets Jimmy

I hate to tell you this, but you missed it! Jimmy Buffett was on Jimmy Fallon at the end of July this summer and played really nice. Meanwhile, I found out just this morning that the network was rerunning that episode. Buffett was really popular on the show, so that must be why they ran it again last night. Last night. No you can DVR in the past, I don’t think. But just imagine how many people saw it, since it was on a holiday and all. People sitting together at their barbeques and all! Anyway, if you remember, he played really well and it was a lot of fun to hear the performance back then!

Buffett’s Friends

I didn’t know that! Jimmy Buffett was a long-time friend of Walter Cronkite. I suppose it kind of makes sense, because they are similar icons for that generation and they’re both near the top of their individual fields. Apparently, Buffett will be at a Cronkite memorial with Barack Obama next week and it will be interesting to see what some of the speakers end up saying. Will Buffett speak? Will there be a song by our favorite singer? This is going to be a good event and a good way to remember this guy that we loved so well! Try to remember him too in the next few days.
