Jimmy Buffet Sponsors First Jamaican to Finish Iditarod

Newton Marshall had a wild dream to become the first Jamaican to complete the grueling, 1,161 mile dogsled race across Alaska known as the Iditarod. Jimmy Buffett (a sucker for unlikely stories) got wind of Newton’s dream and began sponsoring the Former Caribbean tour guide. For months Marshall trained preparing for the race. Daring 50 below zero weather conditions over 12 days, Marshall finished 47th out 71 mushers. Suffering frost bite on his face, the 27-year-old from Saint Ann’s Bay, Jamaica fought through the physicality of the race credited training with this year’s champion Lance Mackey. When Newton crossed the finish line Mackey was there with a Jamaican flag to celebrate the historic accomplishment. Congrats from Margaritaville Newton!

Peter Mayer has been providing Jimmy Buffett excellent guitar work as a member of the Coral Reefers for years, but has always maintained a healthy solo career. When Mayer isn’t on tour with Jimmy, he hits the road with some of the other Coral Reefers (including his bass-playing brother Jim). In his early days, the Mayer brothers scored a short-lived record deal before becoming Coral Reefers. Mayer has a number of original songs he’s written and is playing a number of dates this year. He released a collection of beautifully recorded Beatles covers entitled , Goodbye Hello, in 2009 and plays everything from rock to faith music. Check out his tour dates on his website http://www.petermayer.com/.

Jimmy Buffett Visits Haiti

After the terrible earthquake struck the country of Haiti Jimmy Buffett was deeply moved to help the Caribbean nation any way he could. Days after the tragedy Buffett posted a video on his website urging all Parrotheads to donate to help the cause. Buffett went a step further earlier this week flying his seaplane to Haiti to deliver tents to the homeless in Port-au-Prince. U.S. embassy security gave Jimmy a tour of the devastated city’s downtown. Buffett has been to Haiti before in 1994 and it had to be hard to city in its current state compared to his last visit. Jimmy told the press of his visit declaring “Haiti, is something worth saving to me.”. As many as 1.2 million Haitians lost their homes because of the earthquake and are at high risk of catching Malaria living in such conditions. If you have anything to spare please make a donation to the Haiti Relief Fund.
