Newton Marshall had a wild dream to become the first Jamaican to complete the grueling, 1,161 mile dogsled race across Alaska known as the Iditarod. Jimmy Buffett (a sucker for unlikely stories) got wind of Newton’s dream and began sponsoring the Former Caribbean tour guide. For months Marshall trained preparing for the race. Daring 50 below zero weather conditions over 12 days, Marshall finished 47th out 71 mushers. Suffering frost bite on his face, the 27-year-old from Saint Ann’s Bay, Jamaica fought through the physicality of the race credited training with this year’s champion Lance Mackey. When Newton crossed the finish line Mackey was there with a Jamaican flag to celebrate the historic accomplishment. Congrats from Margaritaville Newton!
